Career Defense 101 offers women seven proven, actionable strategies that help end sexual harassment in their careers for good so that they can focus on work they love.

Women are often told, “Things are really sexist, and all we can do is ignore it.” Career Defense 101 does not accept that answer but compiles research and tools that have actually been proven to work in ending harassment and helping women advance in their careers.

Women often work twice as hard as everyone else to get to the top of their field, yet sexual harassment can still make them feel trapped, afraid, and vulnerable. This may leave them wondering if they have a responsibility to other women in their field (or to other women in their family) to change a sexist environment. As a trial lawyer and coach, Meredith Holley uses what she has learned from her own experiences of overcoming harassment, stalking, and discrimination, as well as her legal experience, to help her clients. Even women who do not want to bring a legal claim for their harassment are able to use the strategies she teaches in Career Defense 101 to overcome sexual harassment and reach a new level in their careers.

"I knew Meredith Holley's book would be good. I first encountered her online, on a book website, and her various book reviews/reports/responses/reactions immediately became among my favorites. She would take these complex, literary, dense, difficult books and relate them to understandable analogies or personal stories that led me to seek out the same books in hopes of the same results. After a few attempts, I realized that sometimes what I desired to read were HER words, not necessarily the books she wrote about.

In a medium where one's thoughts expressed through typed words were the means of connection, not the physical appearance or sometimes-distraction of voices, many of us ended up sharing more of ourselves than we normally would if we'd met in person first. It was there that a number of us compared stories and I was shocked at how common stalking and harassment was as an experience for women. All of us! To varying degrees and severity, but 100%. It was also clear that most of us had shrugged it off but these experiences still impacted our reactions and thoughts.

This book. It's like Meredith read the stories of our lives and then related them to understandable analogies and her own experience, hah. It may not be that we want to examine our lives, but she can help re-frame certain parts of it. There was a time when I was frightened, and googling for a course of action, and discouraged by the lack of recourse, and downgrading my experiences since it could've all been so much worse, and I wish I could've had a simple explanation or a guide through those days. She gives an orderly, useful (!) approach and also offers to help directly.

I haven't been in contact since those halcyon-ish book website days, so I'm saddened to learn she's writing firsthand about Career Defense. I'm glad she's sharing it, and turning it all into tools for the rest of us. I do remember that quality about her, the curious listening and gentle questions to learn more about the other, and in the same process letting us learn about ourselves. She's more than a fantastic human being - she's spreading it to help us be more fantastic ourselves."

  • I initially picked up Career Defense 101 with a lens towards helping my clients who are victims of sexual abuse and harassment. Quickly, however, I began reading it for myself as well. Meredith Holley engages you with her own story and offers poignant advice and encouragement for reclaiming your own identity and power after sexual harassment.

This book is not just for survivors of sexual harassment seeking legal action. While it is essential reading for those embarking on a case as it offers a strategy for how to approach a lawsuit and how to manage the stresses of litigation, this book reassures you that you are not defined by your case and that the work on one’s self does not begin and end with a lawsuit. Often, as lawyers, the cases end while there is still so much personal and emotional work left to be done for our clients. Thank you Meredith for providing a framework for clients and lawyers alike on what comes next.

Meredith Holley’s new book offers strategies on changing the perspectives of survivors of sexual harassment. It does not seek to change your feelings or thoughts, necessarily, but provides steps and a formula to assist in how you think about your feelings and thoughts. This book is a necessary initial resource for survivors of sexual harassment as they embark on their path to self-healing.
  • EVERYONE should read Meredith Holley's Career Defense 101 the person experiencing harassment in their place of work, someone who wants to expand their knowledge of what others go through, and those that want to be allies for friends and colleagues going through this difficult thing in their life. Everyone has something to learn from this book. When reading, it feels like you are sitting down with an old friend for coffee and coming up with a plan for your life. She brings a difficult topic down to a level that is encouraging and practical. She lets you know it isn't always easy addressing sexual harassment in your own life, but it is possible, and things can be better.
  • Career Defense 101 is particularly for women who think they might be experiencing sexual harassment at work; however, it is also a book I think ANYONE would benefit from reading! The author pulls no punches in presenting to us the idea that we are our own best advocates, and actually have the power to create the exact life we want--regardless of our past or current circumstances--through these seven strategies, with support and a lot of hard work. If you are looking for a quick band-aid fix, this might not be the book for you. But, if you are ready to take back your power, honor who you were meant to be and start kicking some ass (in all areas of your life), then you should start reading immediately!
  • Attorney Holley bravely bares her soul and shares litigation insights via her witty and intelligent coaching to empower targets of harassment to navigate the legal, mental, and emotional hurdles that they may face as they fight for a respectful workplace. Anyone who has experienced workplace harassment will be guided through logical, astute, and powerful "action steps" that together create an action plan to defend one's career, pocketbook, and sanity. This resource is not a "one size fits all" approach to the far too pervasive issue of workplace harassment that is being revealed through the #MeToo movement; it is intentionally designed to help survivors weigh the pros and cons of their options to arrive at a tailored action plan that is best suited to their circumstances so they may continue on their path of becoming champions of their professional lives.
