Why do our headaches persist after we take a one-cent aspirin but disappear when we take a fifty-cent aspirin? Why do we splurge on a lavish meal but cut coupons to save twenty-five cents on a can of soup?

When it comes to making decisions in our lives, we think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we?

In this newly revised and expanded edition of the groundbreaking New York Times bestseller, Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. From drinking coffee to losing weight, from buying a car to choosing a romantic partner, we consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable—making us predictably irrational.

"Alas, I read “Thinking, Fast and Slow (TFS)” before I read this book. So, a lot of stuff in this seemed to be a repetition.

So, how is this different from TFS. While both the books are on the subject of Behavioral Economics, hower, Dan has kept the topics brief and discussions to the point, so that the interest is sustained. While he would have conducted innumerable number of experiments in course of the research, he has only referred to a select few in this book. And whatever his criteria for selection was, it was pretty good, as it kept the interest of the readers on. I would prefer it over TFS

A brief overview of the interesting concepts in this book, which can of good use in product and pricing decisions are:
Relativity – to make a line look smaller (or a product affordable), draw a bigger line next to it (or a more expensive model). You need not really put an effort to sell the expensive model, but it gives a relative idea. The important thing is that the products should be comparable, as human mind cannot function with incomparables.

Anchoring – Daniel had labored on this a lot in his book TFS. For a consumer to make a purchase, an appropriate anchor is important, which could be even the MRP. So, low MRP does not necessarily help to sell. The interesting revelation was that “ our first decisions resonate over a long sequence of decisions”!! So, get the customer first. Of course, one can de-anchor (don’t know if there is a word like that), for which uncomparable variants need to be introduced (Starbucks case ) and for which its own MRP becomes the anchor

Reaction to price changes : It lasts only as long as the memory of the old price persists, demand soon normalizes

Zero cost : Free is a powerful tool, although expensive to the consumer ( Woody Allens quote that “The most expensive sex is free sex” is so apt, although that was quoted more from the social norms context). So, make the consumers buy something for nothing. Add freebies for upselling, nothing much new about it. But using FREE! to drive social policies is interesting.

Social norms : Very powerful, but cuts both ways. Once a social norm it established, bringing in market norm will destroy it forever (the example of late pickup being charged at day care is a perfect example). Keep sending small gifts to the customer , they will yield good returns.

Influence of arousal : Frankly, not of much use in commercial, but was quite astounded to read and the experiment was an eye opener.

Price of ownership or endowment effect: Giving an option of refund if not satisfied is a very powerful hook in durable segment, as the endowment effect generally inhibits any urge to return.
Keeping doors open : This concept is quite detailed out in the book Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz. Too many options only destroy value

Effect of expectation and power of price : When we believe something beforehand that something will be good, it generally will be good an vice versa. So, manage your customer expectation. A high price only enhances the expectation

The continuum message is that human beings are mere pawns in a game whose forces they largely fail to comprehend. And that is where behavioral economics will be a strong feed into marketing – making sure that consumers make the right choice!!"

Predictably Irrational Revised and Expanded Edition The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions Dan Ariely 9780061353246 Books Reviews

  • Among the various books available that cover the topic of human behavior, Predictably Irrational is among the top ten (interested readers should also read Sway by Rom Brafman). It's not quite an economics book (for a much better analysis of the many failings of neoclassical economics, read Debunking Economics by Keen) and it's not quite a behavioral psychology book (read Sway) so it falls somewhere in the middle - and therein lies its main weakness.

There are some very interesting anecdotes (for example, do you know why we think black pearls are valuable when originally no one wanted to buy them at any price?) and these are where most of the book's value lies.

The principal weakness comes from Ariely's conclusions based on the work he's carried out. He acknowledges that we humans are "irrational" compared to the straw man of the "rational optimizer" beloved of neoclassical economic theory, but while some of his examples are interesting he fails to see the entire picture. Thus whereas Keen shows that the neoclassical model is computationally impossible, Ariely merely shows that we have different decision-making processes in two distinct contexts interpersonal and financial. This is valid, but Ariely then goes on to show that he hasn't really explored the interpersonal context with any degree of rigor.

A couple of examples will illustrate what I mean. In the first example Ariely talks about how companies strive to create a "social exchange" in the workplace because people generally work harder and more diligently in social exchange settings than in compensation-based settings. We can think of how we might keep on struggling to get a friend's piano up the stairs of a narrow apartment building long after we'd have given up if we were simply being paid $10 per hour by a stranger to perform the same task. So Ariely notes that companies try to exploit our social side in order to get more work out of us (he doesn't look at the ethics of this attempt, or even at its many infeasibilities). Then he suggests that in order to reinforce the social dynamic and avoid corrupting it with the financial dynamic (because it's not possible to combine the two) companies should not give bonuses but instead should send employees off on a paid-for vacation. The problem, of course, is that most employees don't want to be placed in a parent-child relationship. Most employees think of themselves as independent adults. Saying "here's a vacation we've arranged for you" violates an employee's independence. Worse still it assumes the employee's plans for their free time are irrelevant (the cost of leaving one's home, family, and friends for the duration of the enforced vacation are apparently zero where the company is concerned...). Obviously this recommendation would be disastrous under real-world conditions and one wonders how Ariely failed to think through his proposal.

A second example of this failure to think things through comes with Ariely's analysis of cap-and-trade. Rightly he points out that when you set a price on something (in this case pollution) then people may elect to pay more in order to get more. Just as we might only take a single candy from a tray being passed around the group but might buy ten if the candies are being sold, so too might companies pollute less if pollution were a "social good" rather than a priced good. With cap-and-trade companies might simply elect to pay more in order to feel free to pollute more. So Ariely proposes making pollution a "social good." But again a moment's thought shows this to be absurd. Not only do we have far too many examples of companies being quite happy to pollute when it's a cost-free exercise, Ariely's own book shows that executives will ignore social factors when their focus in on financial rewards. As executives are almost exclusively motivated by fat financial rewards, the notion that they would take social norms into account when deciding whether or not (or how much) to pollute is like saying that investment bankers would put the needs of their clients and the financial system in general ahead of their own desire for the $100 million bonus they get from pushing CDOs onto unsuspecting dupes.

So in the end the book is worth reading for its anecdotal value but not for Ariely's own conclusions or policy suggestions. He's not-quite an economist and not-quite a behavioral psychologist and ultimately that means he's not-quite useful as a guide to policy formulation on either the micro or the macro scales.

  • The author does a good job of presenting a wide range of psychological traps and irrational tendencies to which humans fall prey. The book is well written(although somewhat wordy at times) and easy to read. There are many enlightening passages which resonated well and were profound. If anything, most people will come away much better informed about a range of human flaws after reading this book. Some of the reasons that I didn't give this book the full five stars is that the author often rehashes previous research and findings by other scholars and taylors experiments which confirm already known ideas. Also, the book is written rather unevenly in the sense that you have to get through many tedious and laborious passages to get to an interesting point. I definitely felt at many points while reading this book that the author was adding a lot of non-value added filler material to meet a certain page # quota for the publisher. Still, this is a good book which I recommend as the author has gathered some very interesting information from which many people can benefit.

iPad Pro Guide The Ultimate Guide for iPad Pro iOS 12 eBook Tom Rudderham Reviews

  • In my opinion, one of the best ways to help someone understand technical information Is by writing It along with pictures showing what just has been explained. This book does that in a very well organized and common sense manner. Something many technically oriented people have difficulty accomplishing. If you want to quickly and easily understand your iPad Pro this is your book.
  • This is a solid basic overview of this marvelous machine but it doesn't go very broad or deep into what you can accomplish with it. But it will get you going if you are new to it.
  • I am new to using an IPad and if I get stuck I can look up how to do what I want to and not bug my sons!
I am learning more this way too. Give this a try so you can do everything you want to all by yourself!
  • I was very disappointed in this Guide because the programs I want to learn to use for their full potential were not given ~ I didnt need a sales pitch on Ipad Pro..... I bought one and now I need a guide to tell me more about specific programs to utilize
  • The perfect companion to a new iPad Pro. It really does show you things you never thought you'd use or need. I can tell you this, there is a tech support person very happy I have this...LOL.
  • This is not a good book. It is all B&W low resolution images and difficult to read.
  • good overview for new ipad owners. NO INDEX. i read bulk of text on an old kindle DX ,while referring to ipad.book is well worth the 3 clams.
  • The guide is a good place to start and once you've gone through it testing things on your iPad Pro you'll seldom need it again. It's an awfully big book to keep at hand unless you've more desk space than I have.

Having saved the distant world of Caeles and its interstellar empire - not to mention the life of its ruler, Queen Dornoccia - Jim (aka Kid Sensation), returns to Earth with two notable prizes. The first is his long-missing grandmother, the alien Princess Indigo. The other is Queen Dornoccia's great-great-granddaughter, Myshtal, who is a princess in her own right and a budding superhero. And thanks to the machinations of the queen, she's also Jim's titular fiancee, a fact that puts something of a damper on Jim's relationship with his girlfriend, Electra. It also doesn't help that Myshtal is breathtakingly beautiful, personable, and witty - and lives under the same roof as Jim.

As if his life wasn't complicated enough, Jim suddenly finds his world invaded by a doppelganger - an unknown individual who looks so much like him that he is even able to fool those in Jim's inner circle. Even more disturbing, he also mimics Jim's incredible slate of superpowers.

Framed for crimes he didn't commit, Jim is forced to seek out his lookalike in order to prove his innocence. However, as the depth of his double's malevolent plans are revealed, Jim realizes there is far more at stake than simply clearing his name. Now, Jim faces the formidable task of attempting to stop an adversary who not only looks and thinks as he does, but also seems to match him power for power.

"If you have already read any ot the books in this series, you are already a fan. If you have not, go immediately to Amazon (or where ever) and get the first book in the series. I promise that you will not regret it. Specifically, the plot is classic Hardman, full of twists and turns that you will never expect. Throw in new characters and new powers and you have one heck of a good read. I envy those who have never read Hardman's books since it would be wonderful to experience them all over again."

Replication Kid Sensation Book 6 Audible Audio Edition Kevin Hardman Mikael Naramore IH Recherche Publishing Books Reviews :

Replication Kid Sensation Book 6 Audible Audio Edition Kevin Hardman Mikael Naramore IH Recherche Publishing Books Reviews

  • Yes, my review here is a bit unfair. If I could rate this as a story it would be probably around high 3 stars. The writing quality is excellent and the plot while nothing new, is well crafted.

So why only a 2 star rating. The simple answer is that while the story is well crafted, the plot seemed designed primarily to destroy all the character development of the last few books and destroy some carefully crafted relationships the previous books built.

And that to me was not acceptable. I understand that Kevin Hardman probably felt he needed to change things up a bit, and that with teenage characters he could afford a strange love triangle/angsty girlfriend twist. But I hate this kind of twist unless its done well, and this one was a shambles. Add in the clone character and worse, the reappearance of Mr. Grey (a character I hold the utmost disdain for as a plot device) and I wound up disliking this book far more than I really want to admit. It just preyed upon all I dislike about some kinds of tales.

Its not really a terrible book, so I must admit that at that level my review is "unfair", but my rating is partly based on if I would recommend a book or not, and this one is so solidly in my "never recommend" list due to quirks in the plot and character development that I have to give it just 2 stars.
  • No, seriously. New powers, a doppelgänger, and seriously new drama along with life and character changes -- in a much-awaited new book — make the lyric phrase into something like a quintuple pun. (At least.) I know I wasn’t the only person to buy the book while the posting for it was still warm, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint! In a pivotal story that sees Jim’s life changing radically, we get to see him struggle with (literally) life and death decisions that challenge his ethics and personal growth. We also watch his world grow as we learn more about the politics that surround and pull at him. We even get to see deeper into some previously shallow characters (heh). I’m going to be re-reading this one a few times.

Highly recommended - both book and series.
  • If you have already read any ot the books in this series, you are already a fan. If you have not, go immediately to (or where ever) and get the first book in the series. I promise that you will not regret it. Specifically, the plot is classic Hardman, full of twists and turns that you will never expect. Throw in new characters and new powers and you have one heck of a good read. I envy those who have never read Hardman's books since it would be wonderful to experience them all over again.
  • I'm loving the series, the stories, and how things are going. Can't want to see what occurs next!

Having said that, there is one issue I have had with the series with book 2 onwards. You see all of Jim's power's (or those that he develops in the books) in the follow-on books, all EXCEPT one. He had some near-cognizance ability in the first book, but that NEVER shows up in any of the follow-on books, at least not that I have seen. It may have shown up here, or it could have been wishful thinking. But it could also be that when someone looks at something you can see how things COULD go. You can make up your mind on that.
  • This book is a little bit slow in the beginning. But once you get past the first couple of chapters it turns into a fast paced page turner. I definitely want to read more of the adventures of Kid Sensation but it would be nice if it didn't take so long for the next book to come out.
  • I can not say enough good things about the Kid Sensation series. My son and I both love the series. These truly are the best superhero books we have ever read. The only negative is we have to wait for the next one. Thank you Mr. Hardman for the hard work you put in to entertaining and often enlightening us.
  • Very good book with a slightly OP MC, that is still relatable with everyday and not-so- everyday cares and concerns. I do have to wonder how the newest power will be utilized in the next book though.
  • I've loved the Kid Sensation series ever since I picked up book one, and this one was no different. Replication was everything I had hopped it would be and then some. And just like with all the others it's left me wanting more. I can honestly say it was well worth the wait and I can not wait to get my hands on the next book, be it a side story or the next chapter.

The Magitech Chronicles Quadrilogy Magitech Chronicles Books 14 Audible Audio Edition Chris Fox Ryan Kennard Burke Christopher T Fox Books Reviews

  • This series is just one dark mess.
The books are filled with inconsistencies. In book 2 there is a chapter that seems to have been taken out of the timeline of the previous and following chapters. In another storyline Aran is trained, then goes on to fight battles and then is said to be lacking fitness when he goes to a dojo. Aran can fly against dragons and not get zapped, but can’t outfly a fighter piloted by a mortal. The Voria character is a total mess. Is she a leader or not? The other members of the crew are equally messed up.
The author seems to have absolutely no military experience. And just seems to base his military writing on what he picked up on some b-rate TV show. How is a “Private” an officer?
Everyone in this series seems to be enslaved in one way or another. And they all seem to be jumping for joy because of it. Seems like slavery is brought to a whole new level in this series. And at times, the author seems to try and justify it.
The “gods” in this series seem to be nothing more that over powered magic users, whose influence does not even cover the galaxy. Yet the author keeps inserting “the universe” into descriptions of how powerful they are supposed to be.
There are times when I’ve felt that this series was actually written by a number of different people who don’t really communicate well with each other and the group lacks an overall plan. Sort of like a D&D group with a GM, where all of them are writing a story and Penny just wants to kill her character so that she can go get a drink.
  • The Magitech Chronicles is one of my favorite space fantasy series. Chris is continually outdoing himself with the creativity and worldbuilding and scope of events that he builds into each installment. If you've ever wondered what it would look like to have dragons and magic mixed with spaceships and modern technology, this is the series for you. Having the first four books all together in one omnibus is a fantastic value.
  • I think this is the first time I've read anything with Dragons and Magic and Outer space and wars...though I might be mistaken...story moves along pretty quickly, but keeping track of all the spells, and 'spellrifles' and whatnot is a bit taxing.
I finished the first of the four stories in the set...I'll keep going to the end.....
  • The narrator was very good. He has some really great voices, good tempo and vocal inflections, and I love it when narrators vocalize the small sounds like laughter and whistles.

All four stories included in this set are very good and skillfully written.

The characters are very individual with their own quirks, and I love that the author didn't bombard me with pages of Backstory right at the start.

I have four major detractors that kept this from being a 5-star read (the first one is vastly more pronounced in book one, though it continues to be present in later books).

1, significant portions of the dialogue are simply atrocious. Listening to it, I couldn't help thinking, really? Are you serious? Especially with the way the Dragons speak.

2, length. Each book is only about 8 to 8-1/2 hours in length. Which is fine in heroic fantasy or other fantasies with relatively low stakes or scope. But with a story this expansive, I would have liked to see much longer books to really do justice to the stories. As they are written, many parts feel skipped over or rushed. Had the author spent twice the time (or even half again), the stories would have felt a lot more complete and far more immersive.

3, I just cannot suspend disbelief when I'm expected to swallow that a dragon can be a one-hit-wonder. I don't care how powerful the magic is, nothing short of a god (or a Dragonlance) should be able to kill a dragon in a single attack.

And 4, unless it's litRPG (which this book is not), then I just can't take you seriously when characters are referring to spells by level (as in, "normally he couldn't cast a third level spell"). Now, I admit that in the military the relative power of a weapon very well may be denoted by a "level" but in this context I just can't take it seriously.

All that said, I really enjoyed these books. I love the way the characters develop and the way the characterization and backstories are slowly revealed over the course of the books.

I'm definitely going to be picking up further books in this series. Hopefully book six will be released in audio soon.
  • Awesome story, a few obvious logic holes, be prepared to be hit in the face with many blatant plot devices.

Interesting and fairly unique setting, main characters are well developed and interesting / relatable. Most other characters tend to be 1/2d in nature.

Minor gripe for (current price), $0.99, but a VERY noticable number of spelling and grammar errors...
  • The pacing across the first three is horrible, the setting has an unbalanced feel, the growth of the characters is all over the place, and the characters themselves just feel too artificial. That said, if you get the audio book version the narrator helps make things more tolerable, and the flaws start to even out by the time you make it to the fourth book of the quadrilogy, at least enough that I'm interested in listening to book 5, and that's the point a lot of promising series have either lost my interest or start to lose it. If it weren't for needing the background information gained from the first three I'd recommend skipping them entirely, but then nothing would make any sense.
  • Love this series! Can't wait for the next book! It's easy to read, humorous, and has tech, magic, gods....I mean what else does a total geek want?!

It's also very easy to read. I'm a relatively fast reader but was surprised how fast I got through the first 5 books. I find I actually appreciate it as I have limited time to read anymore. I used to binge read Tolkien every year for a decade and was happy if I could read all his works in a week...(glad I grew out of that haha).

I'm anctiously waiting for the next book. This series is one I could see myself rereading.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The intimate, inspiring, and authoritative biography of Sandra Day O’Connor, America’s first female Supreme Court justice, drawing on exclusive interviews and first-time access to Justice O’Connor’s archives—by the New York Times bestselling author Evan Thomas.

“She’s a hero for our time, and this is the biography for our time.”—Walter Isaacson

She was born in 1930 in El Paso and grew up on a cattle ranch in Arizona. At a time when women were expected to be homemakers, she set her sights on Stanford University. When she graduated near the top of her law school class in 1952, no firm would even interview her. But Sandra Day O’Connor’s story is that of a woman who repeatedly shattered glass ceilings—doing so with a blend of grace, wisdom, humor, understatement, and cowgirl toughness.

She became the first ever female majority leader of a state senate. As a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals, she stood up to corrupt lawyers and humanized the law. When she arrived at the United States Supreme Court, appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, she began a quarter-century tenure on the Court, hearing cases that ultimately shaped American law. Diagnosed with cancer at fifty-eight, and caring for a husband with Alzheimer’s, O’Connor endured every difficulty with grit and poise.

Women and men who want to be leaders and be first in their own lives—who want to learn when to walk away and when to stand their ground—will be inspired by O’Connor’s example. This is a remarkably vivid and personal portrait of a woman who loved her family, who believed in serving her country, and who, when she became the most powerful woman in America, built a bridge forward for all women.

Praise for First

“Cinematic . . . poignant . . . illuminating and eminently readable . . . First gives us a real sense of Sandra Day O’Connor the human being. . . . Thomas gives O’Connor the credit she deserves.”The Washington Post

“[A] fascinating and revelatory biography . . . a richly detailed picture of [O’Connor’s] personal and professional life . . . Evan Thomas’s book is not just a biography of a remarkable woman, but an elegy for a worldview that, in law as well as politics, has disappeared from the nation’s main stages.”The New York Times Book Review

"While I was reading this book, I saw that author Evan Thomas mentioned Joan Biskupic's biography of Sandra Day O'Connor (titled Sandra Day O'Connor) as a source (one of many sources) while writing the book. I found a copy of that bio, first published in late 2005, and read both books, comparing as I went along. Both writers make an effort to portray O'Connor as more than a Supreme Court Justice, going into her childhood and career before the Supreme Court. Both authors did interview O'Connor, although Biskupic's interviews were conducted as part of her reporting on the Court, while Thomas interviewed O'Connor after her retirement specifically for the biography. Thomas's biography included some sources that Biskupic didn't have access to such as John O'Connor's (Sandra Day O'Connor's husband) unpublished memoir and his diaries. Thomas also discusses O'Connor's life after her retirement, while Biskupic's book ends just as O'Connor is retiring from the Supreme Court. Thomas interviewed many, nearly all, of O'Connor's law clerks from her Supreme Court years, giving a little extra insight into her day to day activities at the Court.

Still, I came away thinking that if you had to choose between the two books, you might do better to read Biskupic's than Thomas's. For instance, Biskupic showed how O'Connor had been political well before her rise through the court system -- she had even lobbied Nixon to nominate a woman to the Supreme Court (she endorsed a colleague, but it's easy to believe she thought she herself might also be a good candidate) and had been active in Republican politics since serving on Barry Goldwater's presidential campaign. Biskupic was also more descriptive about William Rehnquist's views on race, leaving the reader with little doubt that he had racist views, while Evan Thomas glosses over the subject with a footnote mentioning rumors of racist behavior. This was relevant to a book about O'Connor because Rehnquist and O'Connor were very close (even romantically close at one point in their college years) and decided almost identically during O'Connor's first years on the Supreme Court, although as time went on, she broke with the conservative bloc more often. The Bush v Gore decision comes across as a shockingly poor judicial decision in both books.

Both books are full of interesting inside the court information as well as fascinating analysis of court cases and how they were decided."

  • Given all the recent adulation of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, I was wondering if everyone was just going to skip over the "First." Sandra Day O'Connor preceded RBG by 12 years, and was the trailblazer who opened the way for women to break up the all-boys club of the Supreme Court.

Evan Thomas's biography is addictively readable! I started reading at about 930 at night and kept telling myself, "Just one more page!" Well, 405 pages later, I was closing the book, fully read. I didn't look at the clock! Mr. Thomas has interviewed not only Justice O'Connor, but seemingly everyone in her life, from childhood through her senior years. What emerges is a fully rounded portrait of a child, a student, a career woman, a wife, mother, employer, friend and neighbor, as well as a groundbreaker on the Supreme Court. Justice O'Connor is a multi-faceted person who exuded the dignity and fastidiousness of the bench, but also reveled in her personal life, charming everyone with her undivided attention, her wit... and her dancing skills! This fascinating woman, raised on a hardscrabble ranch in Arizona, seemingly felt at home anywhere she and her beloved husband, John, lived, even in the political rat's nest of Washington, D.C.

In this book, not only do you get a full picture of Justice O'Connor, but the author weaves into her story everything you need to know about how the Supreme Court works, what goes on in the so-called "Marble Palace," and the issues Justice O'Connor faced in her tenure -- abortion, affirmative action, sexual harassment, states rights. We get an education about law clerks and what they do. The law clerks who worked for Justice O'Connor are candid about her, suggesting both the good and the bad of working for a person as intense as Sandra Day O'Connor. You want to get on her good side? Show up for her 8 a.m. aerobics class!

Having access to John O'Connor's unpublished diary, and interviews with Justice O'Connor herself, allows the author a keen insight into John and Sandra O'Connor's marriage and into the mighty struggle with Alzheimer's that eventually claimed John's life and descended on hers. It is truly heartbreaking to walk that sad journey with them. Even the brightest stars are no match for this horrible disease.

Mr. Thomas sums up Justice O'Connor, with all her contradictions, this way "She could be charming or brusque. She could be disarmingly straightforward; she could also be roundabout and sly," he writes. "It is difficult to reconcile the 'bossy' O'Connor, who would tell passengers exactly where to sit in a car, with the modest O'Connor, who practiced judicial 'minimalism,' preferring to stick to the facts and let the law slowly evolve rather than making broad pronouncements." In Mr. Thomas's book, all of these sides to Sandra Day O'Connor are fully explored. You'll want to stay up late reading, too!
  • I have read Joan Biskupic’s biography of Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-) and have read O’Connor’s memoirs and other books. Thomas’s book was written after she retired from the Court so contains more information about her later life. Thomas also had access to John O’Connor’s papers, diary and unpublished memoir.

The book is well written and meticulously researched. Thomas interviewed almost all of O’Connor’s law clerks and staff as well as friends and colleagues. I found the information about how each of the male Justices had to adapt (or not) to a female Justice interesting. I found the lunch meeting between O’Connor and Ginsburg most interesting. This meeting took place just after O’Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court and long before Ginsburg was appointed to the Court. Thomas provided a number of insights as well as material not covered in prior books. This book is well worth the read. I noted how far women attorneys have come since the day O’Connor graduated from Stanford Law School and found out that firms would not hire women.

I read this as an e-book on my app for my iPad. There were lots of photographs. I wished I had the photograph with all the women Justices together. The book was 455 pages and published by Random House.

About the audiobook

The Worldship Humility is the start of The Code trilogy, written exclusively for audio by sci-fi author R. R. Haywood. Narrator Colin Morgan brings the colourful characters and treacherous escapades of The Worldship Humility to life, a gripping space adventure which will appeal to fans of Ready Player One, Bladerunner and Haywood's previous best-selling works, Extracted and The Undead.

Summary

It's been 120 years since the 50 or so worldships containing the few million survivors set off after planet Earth was destroyed by a meteor.

On the Worldship Humility, Sam, an Airlock Operative, is bored. Living in space should be full of adventure, except it isn't, and he fills his time hacking 3-D movie posters.

Petty thief Yasmine Dufont is also from the WS Humility, but she is not bored. Growing up in the Elfors, the lawless lower levels of the ship, has seen her surrounded by violence and squalor since birth, and now she wants out. She wants to escape to the luxury of the Ab-Spa on top of WS Abstinence, where they eat real food instead of rats and synth cubes.

Meanwhile, the sleek-hulled, unmanned Gagarin has come back from punching out ahead of the fleet in the ever-continuing search for a new home. Nearly all hope is lost that a new planet will ever be found, until the Gagarin returns with a code of information that suggests a habitable planet has been found. This news should be shared with the whole fleet, but a few rogue captains want to keep the information to themselves and colonise the new planet.

When Yasmine inadvertently steals the code, she and Sam become caught up in a dangerous game of murder, corruption, political wrangling and...porridge, with sex-addicted Detective Zhang Woo hot on their heels, his own life at risk if he fails to get the code back.

About the author

R. R. Haywood is the author of UK's number one horror series The Undead, which propelled him into the top 20 best-selling authors in the UK. Haywood is a Washington Post best-selling author and both the Undead series and the Extracted trilogy are Audible best sellers.

"So, this is a weird review, because on one hand, i really enjoyed the audio book. On the other, the fact that this book was written exclusively for audio has me scratching my head. There are LOTS of moments in this audio book where the listener is forced to listen to MANY minutes of stuff like, "really", he said. "yes", she said, "oh", he said. "yep", she said. This can go on for so much time, its maddening! The amount of "he said", "she said" in an audio book written for Audio is crazy! The narrator can have perfectly good voices for the characters in conversation , yet, we all have to listen to "he said", "she said" over and over and over. WE DONT NEED that part. Please, for the love of god, do not read the "she said" "he said" part while reading the book for audio. I cannot overstate this. This was so maddening, i have to remove a start from the review. Also, i can't say that im in love with the narrator choice. The female tone that the male narrator had made every woman in book sound completely unattractive. I know this seems shallow, but the story makes a big deal of attractive and pretty women, so its hard to buy into it with the voice.
That said, the book was fun. I was disappointed in some of the longer dragging parts where the writer obviously wanted to have some silly fun with useless dialog from non characters...but whatever.
I will warn you.....this is the 1st of a series and without spoiling much, this audio book ends abruptly with very little payout, so since this book is actually a fun story, you will be left hanging pretty hard and not getting to enjoy some of the stuff that you hoped would transpire."

  • Thank you RR Haywood!!
  • Even before I heard the anti-semitic shpiel, I was wondering how this book has a 4.5 star rating. It is cartoonish and not that well written. By cartoonish, I mean there's a hacker who can hack anything he can imagine in 10 seconds including creating graphics...it's cartoony. And it's not like he's augmented with cyborg technology to do this, he uses a virtual KEYBOARD and is able to make any digital animation he wants in seconds. This book is filled with constant, 'okay, that's silly, but I'll overlook this, that and that too."

Then out of the blue, the author says some of the ships that fled earth were at war with each other. Each ship is controlled by a nation, and the only nation it mentions is Israel...which happened to buy something form the Iranian ship and didn't pay for it (I'm pretty sure that's an anti-semitic trope) and then preemptively attacked Iran in response to them getting mad at them and that the Israelis couldn't get past their differences on earth and nobody knows who started it and no one cares, they just wish they could get over it. This mention of Israel was so far out of left field and had very little to do with the plot.
  • Narration is fantastic.... I could listen to this guy all day, everyday. The story is interesting, and funny, and full of action and I just can’t say enough good things..... I was looking for the actual book, but I believe this is just for audio right now. I recommend this to anyone who is a sci fi, comedy or action fan! Just heads up, maybe don’t listen with a 5 year old in the car....
  • The narrator is awesome, and the story is engaging and funny. The only negative is that this is only the first of a trilogy, and the other 2 are not yet out.

Someone else mentioned anti-Semitism, but I don't see it--just book written from the a point of view of someone who is not Jewish and is puzzled by the tensions in the middle east.

As far as the hacking being unbelievable--it's set in the future. Who knows what kind of shortcuts might be available by then? Someone good enough to code on the fly might have a wicked toolkit that he's created for himself.
  • I'm in love with almost every character in this series. Clara especially is AMAZING. The book is funny, fast-paced, and keeps your attention at all times.

My one complaint about it (and this is really a very minor complaint), is that the author has practically zero interest in actual science. Spaceflight and computer hacking both feature prominently in the series and both are utterly inaccurate. I would have liked a portrayal more similar to The Martian or Seveneves.

That's just my personal preference though and the wonderful characters and story more than made up for it anyways. Can't wait for book 2!
  • Everything about this book worked. Every voice in the narration was fledged out and authentic. The plot was both complicated and simple and while the ending is a cliffhanger i don't care. I will wait. The characters all felt like friends (yes, MY friends) and the world was fantastic. The most brilliant SF audiobook since Illuminae!
  • So far, this audible is SUPER!! One can NEVER go wrong with Colin Morgan. He brings the story alive and into your mind in great detail. The story itself is wonderful...so far. But I have no doubt I will fully enjoy the rest of the book. No regrets on this book. Thank you, Colin, for a great adventure!! Wonderful choice of voice for this book. A definite read for those who love sci-fi, adventure and well laid out subplots.--Brook

An Charts, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post bestseller.

In this gorgeously stunning debut, a mysterious child teaches two strangers how to love and trust again.

After the loss of her mother and her own battle with breast cancer, Joanna Teale returns to her graduate research on nesting birds in rural Illinois, determined to prove that her recent hardships have not broken her. She throws herself into her work from dusk to dawn, until her solitary routine is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious child who shows up at her cabin barefoot and covered in bruises.

The girl calls herself Ursa, and she claims to have been sent from the stars to witness five miracles. With concerns about the child’s home situation, Jo reluctantly agrees to let her stay—just until she learns more about Ursa’s past.

Jo enlists the help of her reclusive neighbor, Gabriel Nash, to solve the mystery of the charming child. But the more time they spend together, the more questions they have. How does a young girl not only read but understand Shakespeare? Why do good things keep happening in her presence? And why aren’t Jo and Gabe checking the missing children’s website anymore?

Though the three have formed an incredible bond, they know difficult choices must be made. As the summer nears an end and Ursa gets closer to her fifth miracle, her dangerous past closes in. When it finally catches up to them, all of their painful secrets will be forced into the open, and their fates will be left to the stars.

"As far as free books go, I thought this one was pretty ok. The pacing was good as the writing flowed well. I was a little bored by how often i had to read about what time the characters woke up and what they had for dinner but I'm sure there are readers who like those details. The biggest hangup i had about this book was how unlikable the main character was. She was written as a step above everybody else in her knowledge and experiences but only because everybody else was written as ridiculous human parodies. The cops were bad at their jobs, the social worker was bad at her job, rural people were so dumb that they couldn't possibly have read Shakespeare or identify a cardinal as anything other than a red bird.
It's a shame because this book had a lot going for it too, but that removed simplistic view of the world made it hard to take seriously."

Where the Forest Meets the Stars edition by Glendy Vanderah Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • “Where the Forest Meets the Stars” is a love story of the most unique proportions. Two wounded adults and an extremely intelligent child are drawn together in a fresh and fanciful story that will have you cheering for the geeks. This is not a sci-fi book but a child’s attempt to deal with a life that is far too painful for her young years.

Glenda Vanderah has created characters that are fully developed and interact flawlessly as participants in this fast moving story. They fuss and struggle and learn to love each other with ferocity in the midst of trying to ascertain the truth of the youngsters travail. This is a unique story and in all the thousands of books I’ve read, there’s not been anything else like it. This is special and you’ll be effected. If there were a second volume, I’d be happy to reconnect with these folks.

The story is dialogue driven and the dialogue is magical. I laughed out loud many times as the pages flew by. There are no issues with gratuitous violence or sexual content and just a few f-bombs that were totally unnecessary. In fact, they were the only expletives on one page; absurd. That issue aside, this book is worth every one of those 5* and then some. Bravo, Ms. Vanderah!
  • A most intriguing novel that, for me, started out a little slow. After the first 3 chapters, however, there was an air of mystery in this that kept my attention until the very end. Another mystery also surfaces which adds to the intrigue.

Joanna Toule, a field biologist, was studying Indigo Buntings in Southern Illinois. Loving nature, I was drawn to this lady with her talents for locating the nests. And, after that the manner in which these nests and birds were recorded and later analyzed. One quote that I loved 'In nature, the winner is the one that produces the most young'. For nature lovers, there is more than ample bird information and some interesting tidbits about water beetles and addis flies.

A young girl, Ursa appears and there is a mystery surrounding her. Who is she and where did she come from? There is a neighbor, Gabriel Nash, that is called the Egg Man. He also has an air of mystery around him.

The author touches on cancer survival and how it affects a person afterwards. This was extremely well done as it included not only the survivor but also friends. The stigma that is attached to certain types of cancer are also covered.

Depression is also covered in depth...There are many causes of depression and it may be the result of genetics or environment. Lots of questions concerning this....is one able to recover with love and happiness?

Another quote that I loved 'Sometimes a bad thing has to happen to make a good thing happen'. Looking back at my personal life (70 + years), this is so true. The things I thought were so bad at the time, turned out to be the best outcome.

Lots in this one including the mystery of Ursa, a family mystery that is also solved. The importance of forgiveness in life is also covered. The author ties everything up at the end...very nicely and all the answers are there.. An interesting mix of characters also contributed to the plot... Loved the independence of Tabby! I would like to meet her and have a conversation!

    Highly recommended.

Please note that this is my First Reads selection for FEB 2019.
  • I downloaded this book this afternoon as a First Look. I finished it a half hour ago. The characters were achingly real, the dialogue authentic, the emotions raw, and the plot had just the right twist to remain plausible with the rest of the story. Brilliant first novel! My only regret is that it wasn't a little longer- can't wait for a sequel to revisit these characters!
  • As far as free books go, I thought this one was pretty ok. The pacing was good as the writing flowed well. I was a little bored by how often i had to read about what time the characters woke up and what they had for dinner but I'm sure there are readers who like those details. • I downloaded it, read a couple of chapters and deleted it off my kindle. This is typically the kind of book that I like but the whole beginning of this was so ridiculous that I couldn't even stand it. She meets this kid who within in the first five minutes basically says I'm an alien and that she heard cheese is good. Seriously .... awful writing.... moving on
  • Where the Forest Meets the Stars is a unique and mostly unpredictable story about a random connection between a little girl and a lonely woman. The story is captivating and flows in an authentic way as their lives get more entwined. I was impressed to see this is a debut novel. I read it over a twelve hour period and when I had to put the book down, I couldn't quit thinking about it. The ending was a little drawn out as the storylines are pulled all together, and there is a subplot with a secondary character's family backstory that seemed unnecessary. These were tiny bumps in a well told story. If you like stories where you can root for the characters and watch them overcome pain from their past, this one's for you!
  • I devoured this delectable treat in one day! Could not, would not put it down! It takes skill to tell Ursa’s story so believably.

From New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White comes a new fantasy series reimagining the Arthurian legend, set in the magical world of Camelot. There was nothing in the world as magical and terrifying as a girl.

Princess Guinevere has come to Camelot to wed a stranger the charismatic King Arthur. With magic clawing at the kingdom's borders, the great wizard Merlin conjured a solution--send in Guinevere to be Arthur's wife . . . and his protector from those who want to see the young king's idyllic city fail. The catch? Guinevere's real name--and her true identity--is a secret. She is a changeling, a girl who has given up everything to protect Camelot.

To keep Arthur safe, Guinevere must navigate a court in which the old--including Arthur's own family--demand things continue as they have been, and the new--those drawn by the dream of Camelot--fight for a better way to live. And always, in the green hearts of forests and the black depths of lakes, magic lies in wait to reclaim the land. Arthur's knights believe they are strong enough to face any threat, but Guinevere knows it will take more than swords to keep Camelot free.

Deadly jousts, duplicitous knights, and forbidden romances are nothing compared to the greatest threat of all the girl with the long black hair, riding on horseback through the dark woods toward Arthur. Because when your whole existence is a lie, how can you trust even yourself?
