In a companion volume to his award-winning adaptation of The Odyssey, the incomparable graphic novelist Gareth Hinds masterfully adapts Homer’s classic wartime epic.

More than three thousand years ago, two armies faced each other in an epic battle that rewrote history and came to be known as the Trojan War. The Iliad, Homer's legendary account of this nine-year ordeal, is considered the greatest war story of all time and one of the most important works of Western literature. In this stunning graphic novel adaptation — a thoroughly researched and artfully rendered masterwork — renowned illustrator Gareth Hinds captures all the grim glory of Homer's epic. Dynamic illustrations take readers directly to the plains of Troy, into the battle itself, and lay bare the complex emotions of the men, women, and gods whose struggles fueled the war and determined its outcome. This companion volume to Hinds’s award-winning adaptation of The Odyssey features notes, maps, a cast of characters, and other tools to help readers understand all the action and drama of Homer's epic.

Read The Iliad Gareth Hinds Books

"First of all, I am biased: I believe that The Iliad is both the pinnacle and the foundation for all Western literature, and one of life's great joys for me was learning to read the immortal words of Homer in ancient Greek when I was a teenager. So imagine the thrill of seeing those immortal words translated into a graphic format! This is a complex tale, told in complex language, with an impossibly wide cast of characters in a culture that seems far away from our modern world, and yet it all comes alive on the pages of this graphic novel, just as relevant to our current events now as it was almost 3000 years ago. I am the parent of two students with learning challenges, and I am using this book to make the classics accessible to them. There is nothing simple or easy about the Iliad. The author streamlines the story somewhat, and uses different types of visual cues and reader guides to facilitate reading comprehension. At the same time, the author uses many of Homer's narrative tricks to bring specific moments to life. This book does contain plenty of violence, human trafficking and references to rape (it's about a war), so parents should exercise their judgement about appropriateness for children or young teens. It's approximately a 7th grade reading level. But it's ideal for getting young adventure-lovers hooked on heavy-hitting literature - definitely not for the Charlotte's Web crowd. As soon as the book arrived on my doorstep, I went straight to the scene of Priam clasping the knees of Achilles, and it was exactly as I'd hoped, exactly as Homer describes it. That scene answers some of life's big questions: How do you forgive the unforgivable? What does it mean to be human? What does anything mean? The author's artwork includes some archaeological touches from the time period of the Trojan War, very nice to see. The overall effect is stunning, and captures the spirit of Homer's epic poem. I didn't think the author could possibly top his editions of Beowulf, King Lear or The Odyssey, but here it is: the cornerstone of Western literature. Highly recommended for adults, teens and tweens who are curious about this ancient tale."

  • Wonderful surprise to see this maintain the quality and carefulness in this new volume. Especially appreciate the symbolic use of color in changes of mood, theme, setting, time. Just as clever and well-crafted as The Odyssey. Well worth the wait. My students will be fighting over this tomorrow 👍
  • On my second read through this. Illustrations are wonderful and the text stays true to many lines in the original.
  • I have long been a fan of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. I own three separate translations of these classics - Samuel Butler's prose, and Stanley Lombardo's and Stephen Mitchell's verse translations. I particularly like Mitchell's. Lombardo's, however, has a special appeal in its covers which link the world of Homer with our world. The Iliad cover is the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach from the stern of a Higgins Boat landing craft. The Odyssey cover is Earth, rising over the bleak landscape of our Moon which captures the longing of Odysseus for his home and family in Ithaca.
Just recently, I expanded my collection with Gareth Hinds' graphic novel adaptations of both books. Hinds has added a new visual dimension to both with his realistic artwork on every page.
It is interesting that Hinds published the Odyssey first, in 2010 and the Iliad just this year. Where his Odyssey tells some of the story entirely through the illustrations, the Iliad uses words on practically every page. In my view, this is more effective than the illustrations alone, in nearly every case. That said, the graphic novel formula works extremely well in both books. This is due to Hinds' research into the history and archeology of Ancient Greece as well as his use of multiple translations and critiques of those translations. His Iliad is enhanced by a fairly extensive set of notes keyed pages where he explains what he did and why.
To his great credit, Hinds asks his readers to actually read one or more of the many good translations of Homer. He recognizes that what he has given us is an adaptation, not the original work. He has, I think, remained true to the originals and through his artwork expanded our understanding of Western Culture.
  • Wow. There is a lot going on in this book. Like a super lot. For me, someone who is not well-versed in the Iliad or Greek mythology, this was just too dense.

Reading this felt a bit like trying to watch all 8 seasons of Game of Thrones condensed into one season. The result is a massive info dump of character names and relationships and that doesn't leave a ton of room for engaging story. I chose to read this because I thought it would be an easier way to familiarize myself with the stories. I think the opposite is true.

This material will be much more enjoyed by those who already have some understanding of the story. My 10-year-old nephew who has been absorbing these stories since he was about 6 would LOVE this. He already knows the background information, so reading this would not nearly be the same struggle for him. I think this is well-suited for that kind of reader.

The art here is good, and I appreciate the efforts Hinds made to try to differentiate between the characters. I also quite like the notes throughout that explain certain words or ideas.

Overall, I give this 3 stars, but think that people familiar with the story will like this much more than I did.

Thank you to NetGalley and Candlewick Press for providing me with a DRC of this book.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark One Woman Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer eBook Michelle McNamara Gillian Flynn Patton Oswalt Reviews

  • Author Gillian Flynn, of GONE GIRL fame, wrote an introduction to Michelle McNamara’s true crime book I’LL BE GONE IN THE DARK ONE WOMAN’S OBSESSIVE SEARCH FOR THE GOLDEN STATE KILLER, which was published posthumously, in which she states about the author “I love reading true crime, but I’ve always been aware of the fact that, as a reader, I am actively choosing to be a consumer of someone else’s tragedy so like any responsible consumer, I try to be careful in the choices I make. I read only the best; writers who are dogged, insightful, and humane.” This pretty much sums up why I read and how I select the books that I do about the deep, dark, and twisted behind-the-scenes grit of true crime. My interest is in the writing itself and the research that the writer has put into the book to examine the backstory of a criminal mind. In this case, McNamara did not live to complete her nearly finished story about the Golden State Killer who spread fear and unthinkable crimes up and down the state of California, but her researchers and husband Patton Oswalt put her decade of work together into an astonishing book, an in-depth look at a most horrific series of events.

The subject is a serial rapist and murderer, who committed crimes from the 1970s through 1980s. Police and FBI agents tracked the case from city to city and once DNA testing came to be, it was confirmed that the crimes were in fact all committed by one person, however he still eluded them.

McNamara was determined to understand who he was, to find him. She immersed herself in each case. With each law enforcement officer. They welcomed her. She was one of them. Her research is staggering.

Even if you are used to reading terrifying details that accompany true crime, this is one that you will need to brace yourself for. It is not easy to read. It is haunting. The crimes that the Golden State Killer committed are beyond sadistic, truly the actions of a disturbed mind. There were times that I thought about putting the book down. I wasn’t sure I could finish it. It wasn’t about what he did that intrigued me, it was about what the author was doing to find him.

That Oswalt lost his wife and was grieving, that their young daughter was left without a mother (he has since recently remarried) but he was able to take his wife’s work and put her book out in the world is nothing short of incredible. As he said “I wanted to do right by her.”
  • I made the mistake of starting this book when I didn't have an ocean of time ahead of me. Don't make the same mistake. Once you pick this book up, at the risk of sounding trite, you won't be able to put it back down.

I'm not a huge fan of the true crime genre, exactly. I've enjoyed a true crime novel now and then, but it isn't a genre I reach for often. But that said, I know the transformative power of a truly well-written crime book. Truman Capote's In True Blood introduced me to the narrative non-fiction genre, and it completely changed my life. I'll Be Gone in the Dark is the same kind of transformative book. It is the kind of genre-busting, heart-breaking, world-shaking book that will introduce a whole new generation of readers to the power of non-fiction done well.

Not only does the pitch-perfect pace grab the reader by the wrist and pull them breathlessly along, but the book walks the line between memoir and true crime in a way that has never been done so flawlessly before. McNamara takes the reader on an emotional journal that is at times shocking, entertaining, joyful and devastating.

I don't care if you are into true crime... you need to grab this book and set aside a day to wrap yourself up in its story obsession - both good and bad.
  • First, to everyone who angrily gave this book one star, and they are very angry for some reason, I'm posting Stephen King's words about this book What readers need to know—what makes this book so special—is that it deals with two obsessions, one light and one dark. The Golden State Killer is the dark half; Michelle McNamara’s is the light half. It’s a journey into two minds, one sick and disordered, the other intelligent and determined. I loved this book.” —Stephen King
This is not your normal true crime book. Those books have already been written and this fact is addressed by Michelle numerous times. This book is about Michelle's time spent researching this case. So, of course, this book jumps around because it follows her and her research. She started this as notes for her website or podcast, and it grew from something she happened upon to something that she couldn't stop focusing on. She is a beautiful writer, and I was drawn into the story from the first page. The portions about her, including her childhood, at times feel like the reprieve from the darkness they were meant to be, but are not any less interesting. I would read an entire book about the crime she referenced from her childhood. That brings me to why this book was at times hard to read, besides the obvious darkness of the subject matter. Many times when I'm reading, I find myself pausing to buy everything else the author has written. Of course that is not possible here, and many times while reading I thought about her family and friends and what a horrible loss they have suffered.
I highly recommend this book to any lover of true crime. SSDGM
  • I'm writing this review of the Audible format of the book. I wasn't sure about buying it for Audible; I like listening to true crime podcasts during my long commute, but obviously a book means more hours of listening that you're committing to. In the end, I'm glad I bought this format. The reader's voice is perfect compelling and yet not at all show-offy, like a friend telling you a serious story over mugs of coffee in a comfortable kitchen. It might just be a little harder to follow than the print version, but I'm still with it, 11 chapters in.

The Blumhardts, father and son, two witnesses to the power of the Holy Spirit, heralds of the breaking in of God’s kingdom here on earth. And almost inseparable today, so completely did the son take up his famous father’s mantle and absorb his vision.

But God marches forward in history, and whoever stands still is in danger of losing God. Here the son, Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt, writes as nowhere else about his father, Johann Christoph Blumhardt, clarifying the unity and continuity in their thought, but also his own painful though necessary points of departure. In particular, he takes a critical look at the role of faith healing, exorcism, and spiritual warfare in “The Awakening” that thrust his father into the limelight, as well as his father’s reluctance to step beyond the walls of the Christianity he inherited.

God wants to renew the whole world, to pour out his Spirit on humankind again, and around the world Christians are praying for renewal and revival. Are we standing in the way? Blumhardt calls out obstacles or “false crutches” that he believes thwarted the movement of the Spirit in his father’s time and his own, all of which are still with us today a focus on piety and personal salvation, misconceptions about mission and evangelism, and the institutional church with its human structures, dogmas, and traditions. If the religion of our churches is too small for God, are we ready to step outside and live in accordance with his great future?

The Cheese and the Worms is an incisive study of popular culture in the 16th century as seen through the eyes of one man, the miller known as Menocchio, who was accused of heresy during the Inquisition and sentenced to death. Carlo Ginzburg uses the trial records to illustrate the religious and social conflicts of the society in which Menocchio lived.

For a common miller, Menocchio was surprisingly literate. In his trial testimony, he made references to more than a dozen books, including the Bible, Boccaccio's Decameron, Mandeville's Travels, and a "mysterious" book that may have been the Koran. And what he read he recast in terms familiar to him, as in his own version of the creation "All was chaos, that is earth, air, water, and fire were mixed together; and of that bulk a mass formed - just as cheese is made out of milk - and worms appeared in it, and these were the angels."

In a thoughtful new preface, Ginzburg offers his own corollary to Menocchio's story as he considers the discrepancy between the intentions of the writer and what gets written. The Italian miller's story and Ginzburg's work continue to resonate with modern listeners because they focus on how oral and written culture are inextricably linked.

"This book deals with a subject deeper than religion. It deals with conscience, the need of a man to tell his truth to the world, something much needed nowadays. He knew he was going to get a death sentence, but he did not betrayed himself. All the power to Menocchio!"

The Cheese and the Worms The Cosmos of a SixteenthCentury Miller Audible Audio Edition Carlo Ginzburg Anne C Tedeschi translator John Tedeschi translator PJ Ochlan Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • This was an interesting read from an historical perspective, but also as a character study and just a plain-old-fun read. I had no idea that anyone stood up to the inquisition and managed to survive (at least for a while). The precision with which the church set out to find heretics and witches, and their concern for following strict procedures is almost funny when you consider that they were trying to suppress free thought. This is portrayed as a true account of historical events and that makes it all the more intriguing. A must read for people interested in the subject matter but an entertaining read for anyone who just likes great story telling. It kind of reminds me of Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. It's not a mystery but the tone is similar.
  • I had to read this for a history class I was taking. I loved the title... which is explained in the book. I have always been interested in the Reformation... I always wondered was it just about religion or was it a social movement. For me the story
Was more social status, who had power and who didn't. Poor Menocchio was a victim of being to smart for his own good.
  • This was the first ground breaking micro history ever written and still stands the test of time. my european history prof used it at TTU lubbock last semester. I kept it because i loved it so much. this fall (2016) another european history professor will use it again and i can't wait to see what more there is to learn from it. O)
  • An extraordinary story that defies all stereotypes anyone has about everyday medieval life and thought. One of those little cabinets of wonder.
  • It is a rigorous piece of research interpreted creatively in the late 60's but totally vital today. The writing is vibrant.
  • While I would not describe it as a page turner, I found the book to be enlightening on the effects of wealthy class culture has on the popular culture of the middle and lower classes. Over all this particular edition is good quality and a great book for academic use.
  • Ginzburg writes an excellent microhistory, however it drags a bit when Ginzburg addresses the trials and works that took place. More focus on the ideology of the character than the character himself.
  • This book deals with a subject deeper than religion. It deals with conscience, the need of a man to tell his truth to the world, something much needed nowadays. He knew he was going to get a death sentence, but he did not betrayed himself. All the power to Menocchio!

When Trisha Low moves west, her journey is motivated by the need to arrive “somewhere better”―someplace utopian, like revolution; or safe, like home; or even clarifying, like identity. Instead, she faces the end of her relationships, a family whose values she has difficulty sharing, and America’s casual racism, sexism, and homophobia.

In this book-length essay, the problem of how to account for one's life comes to the fore―sliding unpredictably between memory, speculation, self-criticism, and art criticism, Low seeks answers that she knows she won't find. Attempting to reconcile her desires with her radical politics, she asks do our quests to fulfill our deepest wishes propel us forward, or keep us trapped in the rubble of our deteriorating world?

Because They Hate A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns America Brigitte Gabriel 9780312358372 Books Reviews

  • I came upon this book after viewing a video of Brigitte Gabriel's where she was speaking on a panel regarding the Benghazi murders when a Muslim woman asked a question about the ideology of terrorism. Mrs. Gabriel's answer was so authoritative and direct when she spoke about the irrelevance of peaceful Muslims in the world when the 15-25% of radicals want to kill us and our way of life. I had to know more about this woman who spoke so powerfully.

I was thrilled to learn of two books written by Brigitte who experienced first hand how a democratic country like Lebanon can be overtaken by a violent and intolerant religion like Islam. In this book, she makes a comparison of the way of life in Lebanon as the same as the United States, and that we too can be defeated by the enemy if we do not heed the warnings. One important point the author makes is that we must listen to what the enemy is telling us which is that they want to take over the world for Allah by any means necessary. It is evident by the acts of terror around the world that they are serious about that threat.

This book has permanently affected me. I will not be uneducated and uniformed again about politics and the war on terrorism which will be a constant problem for the world for many generations. I have always appreciated being born into the freedom I have enjoyed in the United States. For the first time, I feel like I can make a difference by sharing this book and my knowledge with those around me. The average American is so busy with there daily lives that they are unaware of the great evil that's living amongst us and ready to pounce. We must arm ourselves with knowledge, involve ourselves in local and federal governments, and become skilled at using weapons.
  • Because They Hate A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns America

Ms. Gabriel was born a Christian in Lebanon to a mom in her 50s. The mom and her husband had been trying for decades to conceive. Although she was not a boy, the preferred gender in her community, her parents adored her.

Her dad was a well-off, retired government employee, and the three of them enjoyed a truly blissful, idyllic life together in their little village.

"Marjayoun was a small, peaceful town ... with about three thousand citizens. There were Catholic and Protestant churches and a cemetery. The church bells rang for services, prayers, weddings, and funerals. We had a town center where we did most of our shopping, and one movie theater, which doubled as a place for community activities and school stage productions. There was a Catholic school, a private school, and public elementary and high schools. Some people were farmers who worked the fields down in the valley. Some were businessmen who had hardware stores, grocery stores, clothing stores, beauty parlors, and restaurants. We had an elected city council and mayor. It was a close-knit country town that you might drive through in five minutes."

Each and every day, when Brigitte would return to her home, both parents would be waiting for her, with open arms, on the balcony of their beautiful home--even during a blizzard.

In the evenings, the three of them would sleep together in the one room that had the kerosene heater--her perfumed mother hugging and kissing her on the one side, and her dad with the rough whiskers dong the same on the other.

"They sang me a lullaby. I could smell Mama’s perfume on her neck as I snuggled and gave her little kisses that made her hold me tighter. Her hair tickled my face as she moved, and I could hear the smile in her voice. I could feel Papa’s big fingers running through my hair and the stubble on his cheek as he gently kissed me. Our nightly ritual closed with their telling me, 'We love you higher than the skies, deeper than the oceans, and bigger than the whole wide world.'"

Lebanon was the richest country in the Middle East. Christians and Muslims lived together in harmony. However, as time passed, Brigitte became aware of the dark side of multiculturalism.

"We were so deluded with our multiculturalism that we did not realize the risk of losing the very culture we prided ourselves on having. We did not realize that the intolerant Islamic side of our culture was gaining strength on the back of our Western openness and pride in diversity. With our open-border policy, we unwittingly allowed what would turn out to be our enemy to infiltrate our society to plot and fight with radicals within to gain control of our government. .... The problems started in 1968, shortly after Lebanon accepted its second wave of Palestinian refugees."

At the age of ten, when the first barrage of rockets was launched by the Muslims, one exploded on their balcony. Another landed in Brigitte's bedroom, severely wounding her. “I woke up from the dream of a perfect childhood and found myself in a hellish nightmare."

The remainder of the book is mostly devoted to describing the terror of she, her parents and their longtime friends all living together in a 10-foot x 12-foot bomb shelter.

Toward the end of this time, when her mother becomes severely wounded and is dying from severe blood loss, a neighbor volunteers to drive Brigitte and her mom to an Israeli hospital across the southern border of Lebanon. As a result of what turns out to be a three week stay, Brigitte learns that Israelis--the first she had ever met--are nothing like she had been told in Lebanon. Instead, they are the kindest and most generous people she had ever known.

Because of her experiences with professional women in the hospital, Brigitte becomes aware that, despite being a woman, she too has the potential to become a professional--and does so. I'll stop here so as not to ruin the story for others.

As is obvious from the cover of her book, Ms. Gabriel is very concerned not to say terrified that Americans are going to become aware of the dangers of large-scale Islamic immigration to the US only when it is too late for them to avoid the fate that she experienced in Lebanon.
  • Brigitte is an excellent author who writes from personal experience. Her native Lebanon was once a prosperous liberal open society until it was destroyed by radical Islam. This book was written in 2006 and it is truly remarkable to see what has transpired in 10 years thanks to ineffectiveness on the part of both the US and European governments and "political correctness ". Not only do we have ISIS but we also have our president & elected officials continuing to deny/ignore the FACTS that Islam is not a peaceful religion & that it has an agenda to destroy everything we hold dear in our liberal society. As a Christian convert with Jewish blood I am very concerned over the events taking place right now in Europe where Christians & Jews are being assaulted in France as they exit their worship services. This is not being reported much due to political correctness. France will surely be the next Lebanon. If you value your life & the lives of your loved ones, do yourself a huge favor & ignore the mainstream media opinions & analysis when the next terror attack takes place. Listen to an expert who has lived through it all; that expert is Brigitte !
  • This book is a must read. We, in America, need to be aware
Of the danger that surround us and that is invisible to
So many. Don't miss it. We have to be alert and know what is
Going on, not only in the USA but all over the world. We have to
Thank Brigitte Gabriel for her honesty and courage. There are
A few like her that also deserve our appreciation.
